Fine Arts in the Kremlin

The Museum of Fine Arts is one of the oldest regional museums in Russia (its 120th anniversary was celebrated in 2016) holding an impressive permanent exhibition of the Russian art of the 14-20th cc. The artists on display include Karl Bryullov, Vasily Tropinin, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Viktor Vasnetsov, Kazimir Malevich, Vasily Kandinsky, Valentin Serov, and other heavyweights of the Russian painting. Remarkable atmosphere pervades the building, which accommodates the museum, since it used to be the military governor’s palace, where Alexandre Dumas first met Ivan Annenkov and his wife Pauline Gueble – the prototypes of his novel “The Fencing Master”. Paintings are not the only highlights of the museum – one should also give pride of place to drawings, icons, crafts, and sculptures.
